Entrepreneurs have to manage many different tasks each day, and switching between tasks can be draining and lead to productivity faltering. It is difficult to figure out the best way to maintain productivity all day long. However, if you are struggling to keep a hold on your business’s to-do list, try out one of these techniques.

Pomodoro Method

The Pomodoro Method (also known as the Pomodoro Technique) is a system that uses an on/off dynamic for work. To start, you choose a task that you have to get done and set a timer for 25 minutes. Then, at the end of this time, you take a short break of 5-10 minutes. This is called a Pomodoro. You repeat the Pomodoro 3 times, then on the 4th round, you take a longer break after the work portion. This method is great for tackling many small projects, or for someone who feels like they really need a break to rejuvenate and get back to doing great work.

Time Blocking

Studies have shown that switching your brain between several different tasks can lower your productivity significantly. Time blocking can help you overcome this issue. To time block, simply group tasks that are similar and schedule that group on your calendar for a certain time. For example, you may want to answer any emails and listen to voicemails between 8am-9am. Or, you may choose to do paperwork from 3pm-4pm. Time blocking can not only help you get tasks done efficiently, but also help you figure out which tasks you are best suited for as your energy levels change throughout the day.

Do-It-Later Book

Finally, one way to increase productivity is to create a Do-It-Later sheet. You can either do this in a notebook, a word document, or anywhere else that allows you to create a list. The goal of this sheet is to jot down any thoughts you have that are unrelated to the task at hand. We all have those moments of clarity about an issue when we’re working on something else. Or, you might have a great idea that you need to put down on paper. The Do-It-Later book will make sure you don’t forget it, while allowing you to come back to it at a time when you can really focus on it. The only thing to keep in mind is you will need to schedule time at some point to hash through everything on this sheet.

There are infinite techniques for entrepreneurs who need to develop better productivity habits. The aforementioned three can help anyone get their schedule under control and will benefit most who try them.
